And we’re off!
Welcome to our inaugural blackside podcast episode. As the podcast launch coincides with Black History Month in the UK, this month (October), we’ll be exploring Black identity in the UK over the next month, and possibly, beyond.
From the outside looking in, I thought that Black identity in the UK was clearly defined by all the many years of Black people living here. Getting here and observing the reality of the situation, especially up North, was kind of a culture shock in some ways.
blackside, the activity group, was created in September 2022 to get Black people outside to do things and be people because we seemed absent from all the places that we could/should be in. Over the past year, we’ve gone on more than a few walks and had many exciting discussions about ethnicity, culture and more.
Some of those conversations strengthened the development of the blackside podcast as a bigger, more visible platform to have more of those discourses to get more people involved. The podcast was created to discuss the visible/invisible and conscious/unconscious bonds and experiences that seem to prevent us from being ourselves and outside.
This is the beginning of these conversations, with more to follow. Leave your comments, thoughts, experiences and opinions in the comment section below and subscribe to the podcast on your favourite podcast platform to get the latest updates when they’re released.
